Machine Knitted Santa Ornament/Package Tie

I found a pattern in one of my books for a Sant pin, or tree decoration. I don’t know who the author is or where the pattern is from. I just know that it was in a file I have of all Christmas ideas. I decided to make him because it uses “pencil fringe” . I had never tried it though I have heard of it. I made this on my Brother 940.

This was so easy and quick to make and I think he is adorable. He is knitted flat and not stuffed. Because of the way this is knitted, the edges pull in making it look like he is. The yarn suggested was 2/15 or 2/20. I used Flash in white for the face and red for the hat. He actually sparkles if you see him in person. haha

For the beard I had a type of white ribbon yarn .

He is made by e wrapping 15 stitches in white yarn. Then you knit one row. The beard is made next using the pencil fringe. You will have a separate ball of white yarn on the floor to wrap around the pencil. You will start on the left  with all the needles out to hold and put the yarn around the end needle and then down and around the pencil and then back up over the next needle and keep doing that along the length of stitches. Then you knit one row.(You can knit this row by hand if you don’t want to take the carriage across) Then wrap in the opposite direction. For his beard, the first pencil fringe is made wrapping the pencil one time. The second row is made wrapping two times around the pencil and the third row is made wrapping the pencil three times. After this you move on to the face. Continuing on the same needles, you will put 5 stitches in hold on the next two rows. Then you will put one back in work opposite the carriage until you are back to 15 stitches. Then knit 5 rows and take off on garter bar or waste yarn.

Now you will start the hat the same way as his beard. With white, E wrap 15 stitches and do three  rows of pencil fringe but only wrap each row one time around the pencil. Remember to knit one row after wrapping the pencil. Put all needles to hold after knitting that row so you can remove the pencil . When you are finished with the three rows of pencil fringe, rehang the the face stitches that were removed on the garter bar onto the same needles. There will be 2 stitches on each needle. Knit one row of white

Now you change to red yarn and finish the hat. You will knit 6 rows of red. Decrease one stitch on each side and knit 3 rows. Then decrease 1 stitch each side every other row until one stitch is left. Fasten off and leave a loop to use for hanging on the tree or for a package ornament. (or pin)

I did use a tighter tension(5) for my yarn. I made my first sample with 2/24 and he was too long in the face. Also, use a loopy yarn for the beard. You want fullness. The loops of 2/24 were okay but did not make him look very cute. The pattern suggest sequins for the eyes and a pink sequin for the nose. I used black little pompoms I had and a red rhinestone for the nose. He is sure to bring a smile whether you wear him as a pin, hang him on the tree or put him on a Christmas gift. Hope you try him. 🙂

Snowman Ornament

IMG_20151201_172058789~2My sister is putting a lot of snowmen on her Christmas tree this year. I saw this snowman on Pinterest with just the glass ball and white snow inside and the painted face. Well, I did not have snow so I used salt. Stop laughing!! Then I decided to try knitting a little black top hat. I  think it came out cute. I used 2/24 yarn and I made the brim on the Brother 940 electronic and I hung that on the Passap machine and knitted circular to finish the top part.  It took no time at all. I used a 1&1/2 inch glass ball. I painted the eyes, mouth and nose . If you don’t want to knit circular I have directions for knitting straight on the single bed. Here is how I did it . This is a good lesson for short rowing for beginners.

Knitted Bib Overalls Wine Bottle Cover on the Bulky

armyfatiguesbottlecover

I saw the cutest wine bottle cover in a denim fabric in the hospital gift shop. I thought it was so cute. I wondered if I could knit it. I had the first one I made in a Christmas green come out the right size and fit . It was so plain. So then I knitted the red one and put a motif on the pocket and added a hat. So now I am at Joann fabric store with my girlfriend and I was looking for a yarn in blue denim and I came across camo. Bingo! I am going to do one in camo for fisherman. This outfit looks like the waders that fisherman use. Okay, I searched for a miniature fishing rod and they have ones that are six inches which are perfect. I have to buy them. So then I think, okay this could work for a hunter too. So now I have to look for a bright orange yarn for the hat . I found a miniature gun already. I was thinking this would be a cute gift to give a fisherman or a hunter for a birthday gift or Christmas gift.

Then all of a sudden ,Boom, a light bulb goes off in my head and I thought , how about an army soldier! Lol. So off I go to knit another one and I put my husbands army pin on the pocket. So, do I try to make a helmet or a cap. I got out my crochet hook and crocheted a hat with the brim. I am looking for a little sign that says “Thank you ” or ” Welcome Home” to put in the pocket . I am thinking something like this might sell. How nice to give a gift to say thank you for your service.

Okay, you can stop laughing at my ideas. 🙂 Joann fabrics was out of the little suspenders that I wanted. They only had the large ones. So I found a fabric gatherer and used the ends of it instead. I could use buttons also but the suspenders let you open the top to put the bottle in.

I did a tension swatch and then I drew the pattern on paper. Then I cut the pattern out and held it to the machine like a knit leader to tell me when to decrease for the front and back. I ended up doing the straps as bias strips where you decrease on one side and increase on the other. The first one I made a front and back separately. The second one I did in one piece until the shaping for the front and back. I took one side off on waste yarn while I worked on the other. When I was finished, I sewed the side seam and then crocheted around the whole thing. The red yarn is worsted, very thick, and maybe it is the One Pound . The camo is red heart super saver and is thinner. Surprisingly, I did a tension swatch and both patterns work out about the same give or take a stitch or two or a row or two. I also could have started this circular but it is not so hard to sew up a short side seam. Besides, I did a weaving cast on for gathering at the bottom.

Hmmm….I wonder what a felted one would look like. lol

Miniature Knitted Sweater with Tatted Wreath-new pattern

MINIATURETATTEDSWEATERWITHWREATH1

MINIATURETATTEDSWEATERWITHWREATH2

For those of you that may have tried this pattern, I hope you won’t be mad. 🙂

I made a couple more of them and changed the pattern and it is easier and comes out with less  bulk on the shoulders and armholes. The sweater with the wreath and red bow is the new pattern and the wreath with the gold beads is the older pattern. I know it is hard to see the difference but there is. Besides, knitting the sleeves from the top down and no ribber on the sleeve stitches saves a lot of time.

I changed the way the shoulder stitches are bound off. I pulled one set of shoulder stitches through the other and then latched them off one stitch through the next and secured at the shoulder seam.

I knitted the sleeves from the top down by hanging two stitches from the sweater armhole edge to start. I knit one row and then picked up a stitch opposite the carriage onto the next needle to the right of the first two stitches and knit a row. I repeated this until I had 15 stitches on the bed. When I finished with the sleeve, I knit 3 rows at tension 3 and one row at tension 4 . Starting with the second stitch in from the edge I reformed the stitches and knit them back up. I did this with every other stitch for the rib. Then I took these stitches off on waste yarn and latched one stitch through the next until all were latched off. It was easier and the cuff is tighter.  The new directions are in my drop box.

Miniature Sweater with Tatted Collar

Miniature sweater witht tatted collar

Before Christmas I received an order for five miniature white plain sweater ornaments.  Every Christmas this woman’s grandmother would wear a plain white sweater and her grandfather would wear a red vest. The woman recently lost her grandmother and she wanted to have these to give to her uncle and siblings in remembrance of them. The uncle got a sweater and the red vest the grandfather wore.

So I drew up this pattern with little set in sleeves so the arms did not stick straight out. While making one of the fronts, I came out with an extra stitch on the front  so I tossed that aside and continued to knit the rest. While I was finishing one I thought about a tatted collar since the collars are hard to do because they are so small. On the five sweaters I used a roll collar  but it was difficult to sew the seam. I decided to use the front I had made and finish a little sweater and try a tatted collar since I am back into that hobby. I took the pattern for a tatted necklace and made the collar and then I just crocheted it on. So, here is my five hour sweater! LOL

Here is the link to my drop box for my pattern. 🙂

Passap E 6000 Wine Bottle Hat and Scarf Set

winebottlehatandscarfcombinationa

When it started to snow today I heard my wine bottle singing “Baby it’s cold outside”  So I had to do the only right thing I could think of. And that was to make a little hat and scarf for it. 🙂

Actually I was knitting a scarf for an order of the felted wine bottle cover with this scarf. So I looked at the scarf and wondered about a hat. It took me three tries to get it right. The second one would have been good except that I forgot to put the back bed pushers into position . The design came out but the piece was way larger.

I made the scarf long so it will wrap around the neck of the bottle two times. You can decide how long to make it if you try this. Here are my directions in my drop box if anyone wants to give it a go. Good experience if you are just learning. The pattern is 1259 and I used technique 188. If you have any questions, just email me.

Please do not sell this as your pattern. It is for your enjoyment with knitting on your machines.

Now I am off to have a glass of wine to shut this bottle up!

Miniature Knitted Christmas Sweater

DSCF8055[2]

I have knitted a lot of the miniature sweaters that were in a Machine Knitters Source Magazine and I don’t like the way the sleeves stick straight out. So I changed the pattern so that it had set in sleeves.  Here is my pattern if anyone wants to try it. I used my Brother 940 machine. This one just has roll hems and collar and a 4 stitch cable that crosses every 6 rows. There are four cables on the front and five on the back. You don’t even have to do the cables on the back. I used a dress yarn that is white and really sparkles. Hard to tell in the picture. I think the yarn is called  Flash.

Here is the link for the pattern.

Mini Stocking Using Carpet Stitch and Stitch Ditcher

DSCF3666

I had two reasons for making this, well actually three. First one was to try the stitch ditcher and it was really quick! I did not use a technique like the directions said. I just used setting FX on the back bed and CX on the front bed. This way the whole row is loops.

Second, I forgot how to wrap and use pushers for short rowing. My mistake was that I was starting with all pushers out of work instead of in work. I made a second witch on the passap and it was really quick but when I got to the little feet I could not remember how to wrap the stitches to avoid a hole. So I took them off the passap and put on the Brother to finish. I cheated. However, it made me get the book out to do it so that is a good thing.

Third, they will be for sale in my Etsy shop. 🙂

Felted Mini Stocking Ornament

Mini Felted Stocking Christmas Ornament

I tried another ornament from Kay Furfaros’s book. I followed her pattern but just put my tension up at 8.. and it came out a decent size. It is 5 inches long and about 3 inches at the widest part. I then needle felted some holly and berries on it. THe stocking opens up to put things in like money but not wide enough for a gift card. This did not take long to do so I don’t have to charge 50 dollars for it in my Etsy store!

Felted Christmas Bell with Cardinal

DSC00100I found this pattern on the internet called Knitted Christmas Bells By Jane Lake. It was a hand knitting pattern so I looked at it and it was so simple to do on the machine. It is just 15 stitches and 28 rows-no increases or decreases. I cast on the 15 stitches and you knit one row. Then on the next row you purl the first five stitches and knit the rest. So I transferred five stitches on the end to the ribber and knit one row. Then I transferred up to the main bed and knit a row. You continue those two rows for the pattern. If you want it longer, you add stitches to cast on. When you finish 28 rows you bind off and sew up seam and gather the end opposite the purl stitches. I just used a larger tension because I wanted to see what would happen when I felted it. It came out two inches high and two inches wide at the bottom of the bell. If you want the instructions, you can email me or google them.I did not save the link.  When I make this again I am going to cast on with waste and ravel and take off on waste and kitchener stitch the stitches together so I don’t have a seam even though you can hardly see it on this bell. I just did an “I” cord . It could use a little red bow. I just had fun doing a needle felting design on it. Just for the heck of it I am going to put it in my Etsy store.
