Passap Machine, Changing from Rib to Full Double Bed-Eliminating the “holes”

DSCF4229In a book I have called The Knitting Machine Textbook:Using the Passap E6000 by Marika Simon I came across an article and decided to read it.  Imagine that.  I have seen a lot of people asking how to eliminate the holes after knitting rib and going into full needle rib. Well, in this book there are three ways to do it and you use the console. What? Now you have my attention.

Sample one is knitted and it comes out with holes between the ribbing and the main garment. It can be decorative but undesirable in other instances. In the book, sample 2 says “Reducing the size of the holes. Sample 3 says Further reducing the holes and Sample 4 says Eliminating the holes completely.
In the book the rib is knitted with two strands of yarn and when you transfer to full needle , she says to only use one strand of yarn. Well, I always knit with two strands so my first four samples are knitted with 2 strands throughout. When I knitted sample 2,3 & 4 there were no holes at all!
So I went back and knitted the first and second samples changing to one strand after the rib and now I see why they had the headings that they did. When changing to one strand the holes still show up in sample 2. See the picture with 2 samples. I did not do sample 3 and 4 because I know which one I will use. It will be #4 .
Sample one:The console is programmed with the long stitch technique 117. A 1X1 rib is knitted first. Then the needles are all brought into work . You program the console answering all the questions and setting the correct numbers of needles and then knit. Large holes appear.
Sample two : Knit the 1X1 rib, change to one strand of yarn, bring all needles into work and knit 4 rows of CX/CX . Then program the console for technique 117 and start knitting.
Sample 3: Knit the rib but stop the lock on the left side and change the tension to 5 and knit one row. Put all of the needles into work and take the heel of the loop on the purl stitches on the front bed and put onto the empty needles on the back bed. Set tension back to 3 , Program the console for 117 and knit.
Sample 4: Knit the rib and stop on the left side to raise the tension 2 numbers. Take the heel of the purl stitches on front bed and put on the back bed and vice versa. Knit one row at tension 4 and one row at tension 3(original tension) Program the console for 117 and knit. This is the way I have always done it except I have never knitted the long stitch .This has changed my mind. I really like the weight of the fabric using one strand of 2/24 for the garment using technique 117.
If you would like more detailed instructions on trying these, please email me. Otherwise, if you don’t want any holes going from rib to full needle rib, use the last technique and you don’t even have to use technique 117. I used to do this on the Brother and never knitted the two rows after all the transfers and it came out very nice.

Passap Headband-You have to try the design!

dscf3646

I found this pattern in a magazine  called Canada’s fashion machine. It was made on the DM80 but I made it on the E6000. If you don’t want to make the headband, I encourage you to at least try the design. If you look at the design, the little white ridges between the plain knit stitches look like they are tucked into the fabric yet they pop up a little. It is so pretty up close. It would make a beautiful cuff on a jacket.

In the pattern by Nancy M. Seither, you cast on 1  by 1 and knit one row. Then you only knit on the front bed until the end. At the end, you take the 1 by 1 stitches on the back bed, move them to the front bed. Then you bring all the needles in on the back bed and knit one row on both beds. Separate the beds and crochet off the front bed stitches. I would be curious to try this just knitting on one bed and then hang the first row and bind off. Or how about staying with 1 b 1 rib in place of the stockinette for nice stretch. This does fit nicely though.

Here are the directions in my drop box for you to try.

Passap DJ Sweater using Sarah James Slip Stitch Pattern Design

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I was at a hand knitting seminar and I bought a hand written pattern by Sarah James and I loved the design. I converted her slip stitch pattern into a fair isle pattern so I could knit it double bed jacquard on the passap. If you buy the pattern, you look at her graph of the pattern and just eliminate the even rows. Her pattern is 12 by 24 and I made mine 12 by 12. You can find this pattern on ravelry  by searching Slip Stitch Pullover CH521 by Sarah James. The pattern is $7.00

I decided to cheat and I did a cut and sew neckline. I know how to divide for the neckline and it is so time consuming on the passap doing double bed. I was glad that I did it. I originally wanted to make a different neckline . I made two separate scarves, hooked them into the shoulder seams and then crossed them and took the ends back to the shoulder seam. Sound confusing…..it was to look like a chain. Well, it did not look good. I just ended up doing a knitted plain neckband like her sweater. I put it on and it did not look good on me. hahahaha . So I knitted up a scarf and it changed the whole look .

Still does not look great because of my chest size. 😦

I like her sweater since the design is larger. Mine came out smaller because I used the dress yarn by Tamm called Estillo at a tension of 3./3.  and one strand of each. I love the weight of the sweater.

I knitted a tension swatch and when I was drawing up the pattern, it came out perfectly centered so that the side seams match. The shoulder seams matched perfectly also. I had 172 stitches for my width. When I entered my design I added one blank column on each end. When it knits up, you have a solid color edge on the side seams and it makes sewing up a breeze.

My width of the sweater was 21.5, waist to hem-15 inches, neckline depth-3.5, sleeve is a 6 inch cap and 16 inches from wrist to underarm. Total sleeve length is 22. I had a 9.5 armhole opening but knitted the sleeve to a width of 18 to eliminate the bulk under the arm.

Passap Halloween Placemats

dscf2924

Halloween is just around the corner so I decided to make some placemats. The pumpkin placemat will have my candy bowl on it for the trick or treaters along with the little witch lady I machine knitted using the Brother machine.
I made the witch placemat first and it really needs more color in it. I am happy with the pumpkin one though.
It took me FORRREVVVVVVER to get the distortion out of my designs. You are welcome to use these for your personal use but not to sell them as your pattern. I have written out the instructions on how to make these. They are around 10.5 inches high by 14 inches in width . I used 2/24 yarn and technique 183. On the directions for the pumpkin placemat I walk you through the whole process of downloading to knitting. I always do my cast on before I turn the console on. On the witch placemat it just gives the directions for the placemat. Both are the same but one has all the details. These patterns are odd numbers in width so you must center the design by programming 1- (minus) in the set up.
The information and both files are in my drop box link below.

Crossing Stitches for 8 Stitch Cable on a Knitting Machine

Finished crossing of 8 Stitches

Finished crossing of 8 Stitches

Andrea asked if I would post how I crossed the cables that were in the buttonhole bands. Here is the link to see pictures of the process. I also wrote down in a document the steps involved to do it so you can take them to your machine. If you click on the pictures in the drop box you will see the pictures on the whole  screen and can scroll with the arrows. Or you can right click and download them.

If you would like to see how I made the buttonhole, just email me and I would do another sample with just one buttonhole.

Fingerless Fetled Gloves Knit Circular

This is the same two hour fingerless glove pattern that I knitted circular instead of straight on the knitting machine. Knitting circular was much easier and quicker. Well, I was ahead of the game until the ribbing near the fingers.  Since it was circular, I could not go into the ribbing. I had to do the ribbing and then connect it to the glove. Don’t like the look and I did not break the two hour time . I could have taken off and knitted on double pointed needles but I still would have lost time. What I would do next is knit more rows where rib is on finger area and then finish with a crochet edge of scallops maybe. I lightly felted them and I do like how they feel and fit.

CanCun Black & White Sweater

I made this sweater two years ago on my Brother machine  and have never finished it because I could not find buttons I liked. My final decision is to make covered buttons with the yarn I used. This sweater design is taken from the first issue of Machine Knitting Fashion Magazine (picture below) and I made changes. I put blocks into the pattern and then I knitted cords and twisted, some plain and some with black beads. That took forever. The cuff of the sleeve and the collar are a scallop design. I first tried in a black and white white but it was too bright. This is black and an off white.
